Laura* was never happy with herself.
One day Laura entered the little yellow house that is home to the offices of New York Psychological Wellness. Although Laura didn’t know exactly what to expect, she had spoken with me on the telephone a few days earlier and already felt comfortable.
I stepped out of the session room, greeted her warmly, and gave her some materials to fill out as she waited for her appointment time.
Laura was smart, had a good job, liked where she lived. But she just couldn’t seem to feel good about herself. And that was preventing her from getting into a serious relationship. On top of it all – she wasn’t sleeping well!
Laura had been to her primary care physician, a psychiatrist, and a hypnotist. She’d tried herbal remedies, sleeping pills, drinking warm milk at night – even twirling a chicken overhead – yet she still felt awful and couldn’t sleep!
Time for some discussion about Laura’s situation
“So, what brings you here?” I asked after she had settled into the comfortable couch across from me. Emphasizing how tired and unfocused she’d been due to her lack of sleep, Laura began to tell me more details about herself than she had shared previously on the phone.
“Sleep is a key ingredient to good health – you need food, water, and sleep to live and be healthy – physically, medically, and emotionally. From your description, you aren’t sleeping well, so let’s start with that.” I handed her a paper called “My Sleep Diary” and showed her how to use it.
Behavioral Sleep Medicine is one of my specialties. I joked with her and explained how I thought I could help her. She asked a number of questions about her situation, the answers to which gave her a better understanding of why she felt the way she did and how we were going to address it.
Laura knew she had a lot of work ahead of her in this process, but she left the office that day feeling positive and confident she had made the right decision to seek help.

Meet Me
I’m a New York licensed psychologist, published author, professor, and an attorney. I work with patients just like Laura every day – some with different issues than she had, but everyone I see is looking for a way to stop his or her pain – whether physical, emotional or otherwise.
Rather than bore you here with my long list of accomplishments (my CV is a tome, but I’m sure it’s not what you’re most interested in learning), I’ll let you ask me about it when you visit me.
The thing most people are interested in when they see me is how to rid themselves of their suffering. Depression, anxiety, chronic pain, sleep issues, relationship issues… you name it. And I see people of all ages.
What makes their journey at NYPW successful?
They are confident that I understand their problem. They know they need the assistance and are ready, willing, and able to devote the time, energy and resources to the healing process and feeling better.
We can do that together.
