Heart issues or???
Joe* was walking down the street when suddenly he felt his heart race uncontrollably. He found it difficult to breathe; before he knew it, he was on the ground clutching his chest.
A passerby saw him fall and called an ambulance. Within minutes the EMTs arrived and transported him to the hospital. Once there, Dr. Smith came to examine him.
“Not you – again,” she said to Joe. She took his vitals and checked the monitors. “You’re fine, Joe. You had another panic attack. Go home.”
Excessive anxiety can be debilitating.
Anxiety and stress that are excessive and all-consuming can take over your life. And they express themselves differently in each person.
In Joe’s case, it is a series of overwhelming panic attacks which, to him, come ‘out of the blue.’ In others, it is a constant stream of fears that prevent them from doing all the things they want to do.
Or maybe it is a specific fear, such as speaking in public or getting into an elevator. And many who suffer anxiety also have some depressive symptoms.
Depression is often described as ‘feeling sad.’
Many times we hear people saying they are ‘depressed’ when they are sad. But depression is much more serious. Clinical depression grabs hold and doesn’t let go – it can literally take over your entire existence.
Depression grips you over a long period of time and can make you lose interest in doing things – even things you enjoy or get pleasure from! You may experience difficulty sleeping or feel the need for too much sleep; go through abrupt changes in your weight – up or down; find it difficult to concentrate; have feelings of worthlessness; maybe even have thoughts of hurting yourself.
It affects your daily life – home, school, work, and relationships.
When depression moves in, it digs in its nasty claws and rules you.
